Roku streaming sticks and ultra boxes pack a lot of processing power into a very small, fan-less plastic case. If they are placed in a confined space, they can quickly overheat, leading to a warning message on your screen or a solid red light on the device.

Here is how to safely cool your Roku down and prevent permanent damage.

Step 1: Unplug It Immediately

Do not ignore the warning. If a Roku stays at critical temperatures for too long, the internal components will melt or short circuit.

1. Unplug the power cable from the Roku.
2. Wait at least 15 minutes for it to cool down to room temperature. Do not put it in the fridge or freezer (the condensation will ruin it).

Step 2: Use an HDMI Extender

If you are using a Roku Streaming Stick plugged directly into the back of your TV, it is absorbing all the heat generated by the TV's screen and circuitry.

• Contact Roku support (or check their website) to get a free HDMI Extender Cable.
• This cable allows the Roku stick to dangle a few inches away from the hot plastic of the TV, dramatically improving airflow.

Step 3: Change the Power Source

If your Roku is plugged directly into a USB port on your TV, it might be receiving inconsistent power, causing it to run hot. Always use the wall adapter that came in the box and plug it directly into a standard wall outlet or power strip.

Step 4: Clear the Area

Ensure your Roku box (like the Roku Premiere or Ultra) is not placed inside a closed cabinet, on top of a hot cable box, or in direct sunlight near a window. It needs open air to breathe.
