How to Fix Apple TV Network Errors and Disconnects

Apple TVs are generally known for their reliability, but even the best devices occasionally suffer from network hiccups. If your Apple TV is randomly dropping its Wi-Fi connection, buffering constantly, or telling you that the network is unavailable, it can ruin movie night.
Here is a comprehensive troubleshooting guide to get your Apple TV back online.
Step 1: Restart the Apple TV
Like most electronic devices, the Apple TV benefits greatly from a quick restart to clear out temporary software bugs.
- Using the Remote: Press and hold the Back button (or Menu button on older remotes) and the TV/Control Center button (the one that looks like a TV screen) at the same time. Hold them until the light on the front of the Apple TV box flashes rapidly.
- Using the Menus: Go to Settings > System > Restart.
- The Hard Reset: If the screen is frozen, unplug the power cord from the back of the Apple TV, wait 15 seconds, and plug it back in.
Step 2: Forget and Rejoin the Wi-Fi Network
Sometimes the saved password or network profile becomes corrupted.
- Go to Settings > Network > Wi-Fi.
- Select your current Wi-Fi network.
- Choose Forget Network.
- Press the Menu or Back button to return to the network list.
- Select your Wi-Fi network again and re-enter your password.
Step 3: Check for Interference
The Apple TV is a small box that often gets shoved into crowded entertainment centers. Wi-Fi signals have a hard time passing through solid metal objects or thick wood.
- Make sure your Apple TV is not placed directly on top of another electronic device (like a cable box or receiver) which can cause signal interference.
- If it is hidden deep inside a cabinet, try moving it out into the open to see if the connection improves.
Step 4: Restart Your Router
If your Apple TV still will not connect, the problem might not be the Apple TV at all—it could be your home router.
- Unplug your Wi-Fi router from the wall outlet.
- Wait for a full 60 seconds.
- Plug it back in and wait a few minutes for the network to come back online before testing the Apple TV again.
If none of these steps work, try plugging an Ethernet cable directly from your router into the back of the Apple TV. If it works perfectly with a cable but not on Wi-Fi, the internal Wi-Fi antenna in the Apple TV may be damaged.
